New XM touchscreen display featured in 2009 Hyundai Sonata

It looks like a touchscreen display, similar to the one we saw at CES this year, will be rolling out to the general public as part of the new 2009 Hyundai Sonata.
The brand-new high-resolution touch-screen display was (you guessed it) unveiled today at the Chicago Auto Show in the 2009 Hyundai Sonata.
It will feature sophisticated graphics - which XM says will make it "easy to glance at the XM channel name" - as well as the song title, artist name, and category to select music, sports, talk, news, comedy or traffic and weather.
I love this approach personally. The better the consumers' experience, the more likely you are to convert them to a full-time subscriber. That's just pure Marketing 101 right there. When someone buys a new car, they're looking to be "WOW'd" by that vehicle, and a slick touchscreen interface will do just that. It encourages folks to interact with the service. And, as we all know, the more you experience satellite radio, the more you love it.
This sort of interface (finally) makes XM less like "radio" and more like "entertainment" - and that's something we desperately need.
What next?

Cool look. Nice and clean.
As for , "they're looking to be "WOW'd" by that vehicle"... I would rather be WOWed by someone IN the vehicle...
Or by someone with a bandanna around their car LLLIINNNGGEEERRR LLLOOONNNGGEERR

Congrats to the XM team for working with Hyundai to get this nice of an integration in this car. I have a feeling that there will be many buyers lining up to buy this car and the Genesis. It's clear to me that XM partnered with the right car manufacturers and any development support they gave the car makers really paid off.
Let retail go. Get costs under control and focus the hell on getting people into the showrooms and playing with the new toys.
THIS IS A HIT!!!!!

That is a great interface, and to see it on a low-budget vehicle like the Sonata is even more notable.
Nice job, and yes, that display WILL keep people subscribing.

This is a nice touch. I can say that when I went from my plug and play to the XM integrated into my Honda touchscreen navi system, I feel like I went backwards... in other words, the OEM install offers me FEWER features and display info, including the inability to browse content before I tune to it. I am happy to have XM in my car, but it was clearly and afterthought to the Honda engineers (well, the people at Alpine anyway)
I've often said that the various programmers of the Honda navi hardware needed to have more meetings... it's clear that there were cases where right hand and left had do different things, and it's less than elegant.

It wasn't an afterthought.
It takes a lot of calendar time (2-3 years) to get one of these receivers into an OEM install. So, what you see today is based on receiver designs from 2-3 years ago (in some cases, more). I think there is real interest in cutting the lead time; 18 months in the future is within the realm of possibility.
My '04 Infiniti had a lousy implementation of XM, and I felt the same way as you do. I just traded for an '08 with touch-screen and it is vastly improved (as is the Nav system, which now supports voice recognition commands). I believe that next year we'll finally see some of the "pause/replay" functions that have been around in aftermarket receivers for several years, which is a feature that is really useful and that I really miss in the OEM receivers.

I want to see some of these new cars coming out with built-in HDDs (Chrysler/Dodge, Cadillac) allow one to do Inno-style recording with those massive hard drives. Imagine having every O&A or Howie show broadcast for the last YEAR, all right there ready to be called up at a moment's notice. I know the RIAA would likely throw a fit with such capacity, but even if it was only enabled for talk stations, it would be massively cool IMHO.

@Libb: Check out Acura's new XM Note function... it allows for Inno-style tagging and recording on songs within the vehicle. FWIW, XM Note was developed by Acura, not by XM.
@Stack Pointer: I think the automakers have really realized that the protracted development cycles just don't cut it anymore. During Rick Wagoner's keynote at CES he talked about reducing dev cycles down to 1-year and eventually even shorter. Systems like Ford SYNC now allow for "soft" updates without ever having to retool at the factory - that's huge.

It's 2008, do you think we can get a display that extends past 16 characters ?

Not trying to highjack this thread, but how does everyone feel about Hyundai now days. This is exciting tech, but on a Hyundai I'm just not sure. Seems like they have really stepped up in the auto market, but unsure of their reliability and resale. Thoughts?

The Sonata seems to still have the issue of the dash items still being in far reach from the driver's seat. I own a Sonata and I am 5'10", the dash radio in my EX is a bit of a reach from the wheel. The steering wheel only has a power button for radio control. The XM radio will be an awesome experience, but I hope they give the driver a less distracted reach in future models. If they build out the center dash consol a little more, it would be perfect.
Maybe I am a little spoiled in coming off a 2nd generation Eclipse which sits the driver in a cockpit style arraingement. Every item on the radio is literally a finger's reach from the stick shift. I just find the Sonata a little bit of a distracting reach, especially for a touch screen. Otherwise, I happily endorse both XM and the Sonata.
Anyone looking for a mid-sized SUV, TOTALLY give the Sonata LX or EX a drive. Hyundai ranks #2 behind Toyota in quality but has never been able to build its name out of the "cheap car" catagory.

I have been an XM subscriber for over 2 years now and I LOVE the integrated XM in my new 2008 Sonata. I can say this, with my built in system, the signal problems are gone. I no longer experience the "in and out" problems with the FM converter. The sound quality is far better than the regular FM signal. But with this new "graphics" display, I now understand why Hyundai is offering the $3000 rebates on 2008.
