All areas from Kawatiri Junction south to Springs Junction will be affected by the four-hour power cut arranged by Transpower for Sunday, which coincides with the start of school holidays. Neither of the area's two service stations, Mobil Murchison and G A S Lewis Pass, will be open, and many cafes and shops will be closing their doors while maintenance is carried out on the Murchison substation between 11am and 3pm. Alpine Motor Inn and Cafe owner Jerry Hohneck said he was advised of the shutdown a week ago, and had to get a generator from Christchurch so his business could stay open. He estimated that the cost of hiring the generator and paying electricians to convert his system to generator power would be more than $1000. The Springs Junction area was generally seen as a "halfway point" between Nelson and Christchurch, and motorists had an expectation that they could stop and get refreshments, use the toilet and refuel, he said. Mr Hohneck said hundreds more people than usual stopped in Springs Junction at the start and end of the school holidays. "Because of the remoteness, there is a responsibility to consult a lot more." Southern Link K Bus coach driver Richard Clayton, who has driven the Nelson-Christchurch road for more than 10 years, said Sunday would be one of the busiest days of the year for traffic on the road. "The first and last weekends of the school holidays, coming through Springs Junction you'd swear you were going down Whakatu Drive at 4.30 on a Friday afternoon." The company's southbound coach stopped at Springs Junction and its northbound coach stopped at Murchison, he said. Transpower communications manager Rebecca Wilson said it was becoming more difficult to schedule outages because demand for power was increasing and the network needed to be kept balanced. "This is a good time, and one of the few times that we can take it out of service," she said. "In this case, unfortunately, we have had to do it in school holidays." Ms Wilson said the company recognised that there was no ideal time for power to be switched off, and school holidays were taken into consideration when planning shutdowns, but it was important to keep transmission systems properly maintained to reduce the possibility of an unplanned outage. Demand for power was normally lowest on Sundays, she said. Businesses would not be compensated if they hired and installed generators, she said. Murchison's Midwest Cafe and Store owner Lorraine Ross said the first Sunday of school holidays was a "ridiculous" day to have a power outage, and the expense of hiring a generator was too much for many businesses. She would be closing for the day. Transpower had nominated May 18 as a reserve date in case weather prevented the maintenance work going ahead, and this would be much more suitable for businesses, she said. Murchison Visitor Information committee chairwoman Wendy Wood said the centre would remain open because it was a busy period, but would have no lights, heating, phone, Internet or Eftpos services. She also believed that Transpower should have consulted the community before setting the outage date.
